Deciding to exec produce this film myself was a hard decision to come to, because it felt impossible. I spent a good part of 2009 beating the pavement for funding from the powers that be. Everyone loved the concept, but they all said, "Call me when you're done, I know I can sell it to X, Y or Z." or, "I have an investor if you can confirm distribution."
I was hot and heavy on social media to let everyone know I was looking for money for Nice & Rough, when I received a message from a sista who spotted me on LinkedIn. She asked for my number and said she wanted to me about something. The gist of our conversation was the importance of maintaining creative control and ended with this amazing description of what it would be like to sit at the negotiating table owning Nice & Rough outright. I was given the same bit of advice on 3 occasions. And with 3 being my lucky number, I decided to listen. That was 2 years ago.
To date, Nice & Rough has been funded almost exclusively by the yours truly, and the generosity of a very patient and talented team who believe this is a story that must be told. The IndieGoGo campaign was launched to raise funds for accommodations, travel, and equipment needs for our east coast shoots, slated for Spring, 2012. The campaign closes on March 4, 2012.
The campaign has gotten off to a slow start. But with a little over a month left, I still believe it is possible to reach our goal. Every time I feel overwhelmed by the journey, I mystically get an email from a black woman in rock out there workin'' it on her own. In one a recent email, one rocker said when she watched the trailer she cried because she was so happy this story was finally being told.
These are the hardest working women in show business! And it's time for them to be celebrated. No contribution is too small or too large. And we offer some of the best perks and incentives ever provided on a crowd-sourcing campaign, from hard-rock ringtones, to vintage vinyl by the legendary Betty Davis. Check it out, at
